Character Name: Finn Nam
Canon: Original
Canon Point: Finn has recently revealed himself as not-quite-human to his boyfriend
Age: 21
History: Finn's birth details are strange, being a half-nature spirit, half-human, raised as a normal boy in the multinational city of New Seoul. As a child, he enjoyed exploring beyond the beaten path, cherishing the natural world that responds to him, and occasionally helping his father out with his landscaping work. An average student, he could often be found daydreaming in the back of the classroom, doodling fantasy landscapes in the margins of his notebooks.
Introspective and easily lost, there had always been a voice in the back of his mind, whispering unintelligible secrets that he couldn't quite decipher until one day Finn fell asleep on the train to his home in the outer edges of the city and woke up instead to a world not quite like his own. It was there that he finally met his capricious mother, a nature spirit and guardian of the cherry trees. Finn was born from a brief encounter during one of his mother's trips to the human world. Now, after discovering the missing pieces of his identity, he feels more at ease with himself. He continues to navigate the balance between both sides of who he is and is eager to explore his connections to nature further. Perhaps his mother passed on more than the ability to "speak" to plants...
But for now, he's met many new friends through college and his apartment neighbors, including his boyfriend, Yuri. Their friend group has gone through many magical discoveries, and Finn doesn't quite feel like an odd man out in the world anymore.
Is this character an AU? What type?: No
AU History: N/A
Personality: Introspective, shy, and sensitive, Finn is eager to help those around him but grew up often feeling out of place. While he often feels hesitant in social situations, it doesn’t dampen his adventurous spirit. Finn has an innate desire to explore the unknown, driven by a gentle curiosity that guides him into new experiences, even if he sometimes trips over his own two feet along the way. He continues to be inspired by his father's kindness and silliness, and his childhood best friend, Jisoo's, spirit and determination. With his active imagination and how his mind often wanders, he misses social cues and is grateful for the patience of his friends and family. It encourages him to make a bigger effort to be less passive in his personal life and pay attention, especially since he started dating his attentive boyfriend, Yuri.
As an intrepid wanderer, Finn is prone to disappearing without a word, having let his feet guide him to new places, but it sometimes comes at the cost of neglecting his personal obligations. With a growing group of friends, a mix of both human and not quite human, he's also learning to be more empathetic to them and far more dependable.
Finn is a steadfast cheerleader for his boyfriend's dreams, marveling at the way Yuri navigates the world with such self-sufficiency. Even so, Finn often feels like a lost ship at sea, adrift in the swirling currents of society's expectations for young adults ready to set sail from their ports. Although he's grown wiser and bolder since starting community college, Finn still finds himself pondering the many paths that lie before him.
Powers and Abilities: You could say that Finn has Disney princess syndrome, walking through life with trees bowing their branches in greeting, birds always singing outside his window. Outside of his ability to find ways to travel between the human world and the magic island where his mother resides, he does not outwardly possess other magical powers. He does, however, share a silent connection with flora and fauna. This comes in handy, particularly when it comes to their health and upkeep.
Inventory: The clothes on his back (a big green sweater, faded brown plaid pants), a backpack full of nonsense (pet adoption flyers, two half-empty bags of hard candy and lollipops, school notebooks, a digital camera and charger, an instant camera with some film left, a phone charger with no phone somehow), spare hiking accoutrements (solar-powered flashlight, a small compass, bandaids).
Sample: TDM top level. TDM schmoopiness with Yuri.
When presented with a choice, is the character more likely to stick with tried and true methods? Or make something new up on the fly? Finn is truly an out-of-the-box thinker and would try to come up with something on the fly, especially if exploring the worlds presented to him in the library. If faced with a serious situation that affects many, however, he might hesitate and look to other people to choose for him, especially those with more experience.
What is more important to your character, preserving the past or forging a future? Finn values forging a future without forgetting the past. He sees history as building blocks, but prefers to look forward and not over his shoulder.
How does your character influence their own story? What about the stories of others? Though he does not appear headstrong at first glance, Finn's journey of self-discovery has been a stubborn one, as he has ignored the rules the world has set before him in order to figure out the story he wants to write for himself. His way of moving about the world has also influenced his friends to slow down and appreciate what they have, or to find magic in unexpected places.
Are you alright with your character’s canon being used as a Recommended Reading?: Sure! He's an original character born from collaboration with other writers, but I'd be happy to provide more Finn context if you need any.
